Highlights of the trip:
- The region’s architecture is stunning – pedestrianized town centers are decked with ornate balconies and baroque churches.
- Reveling in the real Italy in the smaller towns off the tourist trail, like Nardò.
- Gorgeous Puglian cuisine and local wines at small romantic alleyway restaurants.
Trip summary:
Gone are the days of Puglia being the neglected heel of Italy. Now ‘Salentoshire’ is flourishing! Italy’s deep south bakes in the heat of the Mediterranean summer but in June or September you’ll get wonderful weather and your pick of the best restaurant tables! Known for its wonderful baroque architecture, gems like Lecce are complemented by undiscovered small towns where you can experience “la dolce vita” like a local in the square on an evening. The coast is renowned for its crystal clear water and small fishing villages. As a university the capital, Bari, has a vibrant old town. The local ‘trulli’ with their conical stone roofs dot the Itria valley. Fine wines, delicious pasta, and wonderful seafood will fuel your adventure through narrow streets in many a romantic ‘centro storico’.
Our insider tips:
- Eschew the major tourist attractions. Villages like Cenate with its time-worn splendid palazzos, Santa Catalina’s seafront gintoneria and Santa Maria al Bagno’s smart seafood restaurants make for a wonderful day trip away from the crowds.
- Swat up on Italian driving customs before you go and drive like a local.
- The beautiful ceramics the region produces make wonderful souvenirs; a visit to Grottaglie is a must.

Puglia is hot so shoulder season dates work best. Go too early though and the sleepy towns and seaside restaurants are still closed. June and September are the ideal dates.
