Our highlights of the trip:
- The laid-back eccentric atmosphere of the Keys with so many Tiki bars offering takeout mojitos to watch the sunset with!
- Chartering – yachts, speedboats, sport fishing, SUPs, kayaks… it’s a watersports paradise!
- The colonial charm of Key West’s old quarter.
Trip summary:
Our favorite road trip from our very own honeymoon, don’t miss the Keys! What could be cooler than cruising down Highway 1 from Miami to Key West? With spectacular bridges like Seven Mile over tropical water, this is one road trip you’re going to savor. Key West is a party town with Duval Street as the hub and makes a great starting point for the holiday. After a few days of excitement, adopt “Keys time” and drift slowly back up the chain. Stop off to experience the flavor of Florida at Keys Fisheries in Marathon which serves delicious fresh stone crab and an amazing Bloody Mary. Feed the tarpon at Robbie’s in Islamorada, tour Hemmingway’s house, and explore the history of the Keys at Bahia Honda State Park. The smaller Keys are home to some great hotels and restaurants; it’s worth taking it slowly with lots of detours.
Our insider tips:
- Local events are a perfect way to get the flavor of Florida – we went to a stone crab eating contest!
- The Hispanic influence from Cuban migrants should not be forgotten. The Key West Botanical Gardens was founded in 1936 and includes a collection of Cuban chugs or handmade refugee boats.
- Talk to the people – the residents of the Keys are very eccentric and really make your time there special!
- Whilst there are some good beaches in the Keys, if you’re a real beach fan make sure to include some time in Florida. The beaches are better on the mainland.
Hotel highlight:

With six pools (yes, six!) and a great bar & restaurant, the hotel is ideally placed for chartering from the marina and is getting glowing reviews!
