Hidden Sharm: Beyond the Sunloungers

Sharm El Sheikh has an easy, obvious appeal: reliable winter sun, warm seas, and that blissful feeling of swapping grey skies for blue ones. With daytime temperatures sitting in the mid-20s through winter, it’s no surprise travellers from across Northern Europe treat the Red Sea as their cold-season escape.

But there’s a catch. If you stay only within the familiar orbit of Naama Bay’s promenade and the long rows of luxury resorts, Sharm can start to blur into a sun-soaked sameness. The real magic begins when you look past the pool decks and step outside the resort complexes: towards the desert edges or, most importantly, the sea. Then you find that Sharm actually does have its own charm.

Sharm’s most compelling hidden feature is its reef system. Miles of barrier reef trace the coastline, creating some of the most spectacular underwater scenery in the world. Despite years of neglect and abuse, a new age of Aquarius has dawned with local scuba dive centres leading the conservation effort, supported by government grants and initiatives. One of the standouts is Ras Mohammed National Park, a huge Marine Protected Area at the southern tip of Sinai. Here, tighter regulations and active restoration are helping the reef recover: anchor bans reduce breakage, pollution controls limit run-off, and monitoring programmes track reef health over time. In some areas, nursery-grown coral is being planted to help repair damaged sections, an encouraging sign that Sharm’s natural crown jewel is being taken seriously again.

If you’ve ever considered learning to scuba dive, Sharm is one of the best places to start. Visibility is often excellent, marine life is abundant, and the experience of slipping beneath the surface and entering a living reef world is hard to match. Jacques Cousteau famously described this area as “the aquarium of the world,” and it’s easy to understand why once you’ve seen the coral gardens for yourself.

Within the land area of Ras Mohammed National Park, make time for the Magic Lake: a natural saltwater pool set against stark desert terrain. Depending on the sun and the time of day, the water appears to change from pale turquoise to a deeper, moodier blue. Quiet, slightly surreal, and beautifully photogenic, it’s one of the park’s most memorable features and a reminder that Sharm’s landscapes are just as striking above the surface as below it.

For a completely different side of Sharm, head north-east to the Nabq Mangrove Forest. This protected coastal ecosystem sits where desert and sea collide, and it feels spacious, quiet, and refreshingly untouched compared with the busier beachfronts.

It’s also one of the northernmost mangrove systems in the world, which makes it ecologically significant. The views here are subtle: salt flats, low trees, wide skies, and it’s a dramatic contrast to the resort zone.

For a destination best known for beaches and blue water, the Sharm El-Sheikh Museum is a genuinely brilliant surprise. It’s small enough to visit with ease, yet the quality of the exhibits punches well above its weight. The museum is beautifully presented and far more memorable than most people expect from a resort town.

Inside, you’ll find a selection of statues, sarcophagi, mummies, and everyday objects that bring ancient Egypt to life in a way that feels immediate rather than academic. Consider it the ideal “gateway” museum too: it won’t overwhelm you, but it will absolutely spark the urge to go deeper on a future visit to Cairo’s new enormous Grand Egyptian Museum!

Sharm El Sheikh may draw you in with winter sun and easy beach days, but it’s what lies beyond the resorts that charms: world-class reefs, protected desert landscapes, and a museum that adds culture to your visit.
